London City Lionesses have been a refreshing addition to the WSL this season and after their win against Tottenham they entered the top half of the table for the first time.

The newly-promoted outfit looked all set for a draw on Sunday with the score level after 80 minutes.

However the Lionesses fought back late on. An own goal from Amanda Nildén with ten minutes to play put the hosts ahead and Freya Godfrey put the seal on all three points with her second of the game.

After their late resurgence Jocelyn Precheur’s team rose into the top six of the WSL for the first time in the club’s history. 

Although they had already picked up three wins in the league this season, the Tottenham victory on Sunday felt like their biggest one yet. 

Beating Spurs was a landmark occasion for the London club as it was a first against opposition from the top six.

The three points also moved London City Lionesses to within three points of their city rivals as we approach the midway point in the season.

After spending big in the summer expectations were high for the Lionesses, but they have already exceeded those early in the campaign.

Jocelyn Precheur aiming high

Following Sunday’s win, Jocelyn Precheur discussed his ambitions for the Lionesses who are aiming high in their top flight debut campaign. 

“It was an important game for us to decide which part of the table we can stay [in],” said Precheur.

“I prefer to go game after game. I don’t like to talk about vision and where we can be in the table at the end of the season. It’s really important to keep this dynamic.

“Despite the fact that we’re improving, I think we’re yet to achieve our full potential. It’s about how we can keep improving again. This will give the players the energy to keep developing.”

London City Lionesses face off against Aston Villa next weekend in matchday nine.

With the Clarets breathing down London City’s neck just two points back in seventh, another win on Sunday could open the gap between the club and the bottom half of the table.
