Bayern are not interested in signing Malick Thiaw from Newcastle in the summer.

The reigning Bundesliga champions currently have a full complement in the heart of defence between Jonathan Tah, Dayot Upamecano, Hiroki Itō, and Kim Min-jae.

Vincent Kompany’s men would only consider adding to the ranks if one of that quartet were to depart in the summer transfer window.

Bayern do appreciate Thiaw (6′ 4″) as a quality defensive option, however, a move for the German (or any alternative for that matter) will depend on Min-jae leaving at the end of the season.

“It is NOT TRUE: Bayern are interested in signing Malick Thiaw this summer,” the head of sport at BILD exclusively informed CF Bayern Insider.

“Of course, he’s an interesting player. He’s already played for the German national team, and if they’re searching for a new centre-back, Thiaw has a profile that’s of great interest.

“I know the player quite well, but at the moment, it doesn’t make any sense to bring the 24-year-old to Munich because of Jonathan Tah and Dayot Upamecano.”

Of course, it’s worth bearing in mind that the summer signing would more than likely be pushing for a starting berth. Picking up a spot as Bayern’s third-choice centre-back would surely not appeal.

What do Thiaw’s teammates think of him?

Interestingly, another man to have previously caught Bayern’s eye, Nick Woltemade, is a big fan of his fellow summer signing.

The Germany international offered a glowing review of his Magpies colleague (via Liverpool World) after a convincing display against Everton this term: “Unbelievable player.

“We’re always making jokes about how he can’t head but today he scores two. Yesterday, he wanted to train headers but the rain was so bad that we couldn’t train. But I don’t think he needs it anymore!”

Manchester United could provide greater competition

Manchester United could prove to be better competitors for the German’s signature.

“I heard that the player himself would, of course, see a better chance of more minutes with the national side if he were to make a move back to Germany,” Falk continued.

“But Malick Thiaw is doing very well at Newcastle, and he’s enjoying his stay there, so there’s no pressure here!

“I heard that Manchester United, however, do have their eye on the centre-back, so perhaps this is the more interesting transfer story at the moment!”

That’s thanks in no small part to the Red Devils likely needing a starting centre-back in the summer window.

Whilst United may perceive Leny Yoro and Lisandro Martinez as their ideal starting centre-half duo, the latter’s repeated injury issues mean a more reliable option will surely be sought this summer.

And Michael Carrick’s men should arguably look no further than Malick Thiaw. The former AC Milan star has only missed eight games for club and country in the last two campaigns (all of which came in the 2024/25 season).
