FC Bayern were held to a 2-2 draw by Union Berlin on Saturday. Danilho Doekhi and Luis Díaz traded goals in the first half before Doekhi restored Union’s lead in the closing stages, but Harry Kane levelled the scores in added time to keep Bayern unbeaten this season, although their winning start was ended in the capital.
Munich started with Manuel Neuer in goal and Konrad Laimer, Dayot Upamecano, Jonathan Tah and Josip Stanišić in defence. Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka anchored a midfield featuring Michael Olise, Serge Gnabry and Díaz, with Kane up front. Lennart Karl, Tom Bischof, Aleksandar Pavlović and Nicolas Jackson came on for Gnabry, Laimer, Goretzka and Stanišić in the second half.
Union got off to the better start, Bayern making a number of blocks before Ilyas Ansah headed past Neuer, but the goal was chalked off for offside on review. The home side did take the lead, however, when Neuer couldn’t grasp Doekhi’s shot from a corner.
Neuer denied Ansah, but Bayern soon upped the ante, with Kane seeing a shot blocked before Díaz shone when he sidestepped a defender after a one-two with Stanišić and curled past Union keeper Frederik Rønnow from an extremely tight angle. Díaz fired wide with only Rønnow to beat before Upamecano invited Kane to slot in, but the flag was up for offside and it was level at half-time.
Clear-cut chances were at a premium for a spell. Janik Haberer fired over before Rønnow made a fine save against Olise. Goretzka blasted over and Rønnow beat Laimer to a pass.
Neuer made a comfortable save against Ansah, but Union restored their lead when a free-kick was cleared only as far as Doekhi, who found the net from close range and looked to have secured Union a first-ever win in this fixture. However, Bayern levelled in added time, Kane running onto Bischof’s cross to head past Rønnow. Another Kane shot was deflected behind the spoils were shared in the capital.
The result means Bayern top the table on 28 points from ten matches, six clear of RB Leipzig. A number of FCB players will be on national team duty during the international break before returning to club action on 22 November, when they entertain Freiburg in the Bundesliga.
