"I think, given the mood, we would not have won. It might have been our most talented team for some time, but it was the worst atmosphere I have known with France, the moment the team were the least united since I joined."
Speaking to Le Parisien, he reflected on the last-16 defeat by Switzerland at Euro 2021, 3-3 after extra time and 5-4 on penalties, which ended Didier Deschamps’s side’s campaign at the first knockout stage.
Asked by Warren-Zaïre Emery which moment of his career he would relive, Mbappé put Euro 2021 at the very bottom.
That tournament also saw the surprise return of Karim Benzema, a dispute over social media visuals, scrutiny of the Mbappé-Giroud relationship, and Ousmane Dembélé’s injury-enforced departure, episodes that shook the squad.
"It was felt within the group. We talk about it often among the players, and maybe it did not show from the outside."
