In Sweden, Kylian Mbappé and France’s attack are viewed as a major threat before Sweden face France in the World Cup last 16. His brief stay in Stockholm in autumn 2024 triggered controversy and saw his name linked to a quickly closed investigation.
According to L'Équipe, France won all three group games, leaving Swedish supporters with slim hopes of progress. Graham Potter’s side would need to raise their level, especially defensively after the 1-5 defeat to the Netherlands on 20 June, to contain France’s firepower led by Mbappé.
In Sweden, the Real Madrid forward is widely regarded as one of the best in the world and among the standouts of his generation, not in the Messi, Maradona or Pelé bracket, but not far behind. He is seen as the main danger, though the conversation often focuses on the French frontline as a whole.
Mbappé’s name also loomed large in October 2024, when he spent a few days in Stockholm while unavailable for the national team, prompting a row. The episode took a darker turn when two outlets linked him to an investigation into rape and sexual assault following a complaint after an evening in the capital.
The prosecutor later said the evidence was insufficient to continue and closed the case, while Mbappé maintained he was never concerned and that the police never contacted him. The matter is less discussed now, though it sparked debate in a country where consent laws are among the strictest, and he remains an idol for many Swedish children.
