Lamine Yamal, 18, has suffered a left hamstring injury, though he should still be able to join Spain for the World Cup in June and July.
He went off after converting a penalty in the 1-0 win over Celta Vigo on Wednesday night. He reported to the training centre around 11am on Thursday for tests and an MRI, which confirmed a lesion of the left biceps femoris. The club said in a statement that he will not play again this season.
He will also miss the Clasico against Real Madrid on 10 May. Yamal is La Liga’s leading assist provider this season with 11 assists.
The setback is a blow for head coach Hansi Flick, who was already pessimistic after the match. Already without Raphinha, he must cope without Yamal for Barcelona’s final five league games. Barcelona hold a nine-point cushion over Madrid.
There is encouragement for Luis de la Fuente and Spain, as Yamal should be able to link up with La Roja and prepare for the World Cup from 11 June to 19 July. No exact timeline was given, but the lay-off is at least four weeks with conservative treatment due to a high risk of relapse.
