Joan Laporta won a resounding re-election as Barcelona president, defeating Víctor Font to secure a third term until 2031.
According to Superdeporte, Laporta claimed 32,934 votes, 68.18 per cent, to Font’s 29.78, a margin surpassed only by Josep Lluis Núñez in 1997. Turnout was 42.34 per cent, the lowest since 1997’s 34.38, with bans on postal and online voting again felt.
After the 5-2 win over Sevilla, several players voted then formed a huddle with Laporta. Pedri, Cubarsí and Raphinha offered a public show of support. The image was powerful, and to some, questionable in an electoral process.
Celebrations in the Camp Nou offices began before official confirmation, with cava opened and plans to continue at Luz de Gas. Laporta worked the vote all day, greeting members and posing for photos, well before a more reserved Font arrived.
Font’s pitch for a more modern, professional and less personalist club again fell flat, and he polled worse than in 2021. Laporta’s dominance withstood opposition attacks and scrutiny over his management.
From the start of July, the re-elected president returns to his office on Arístides Maillol. Completing the Camp Nou is set as his signature goal. Five more years of laportismo now await.
