Lazio had been enjoying a superb run, putting together a seven-match winning streak across all competitions, but are now coming off a disappointing week that saw them settle for a goalless draw against Ludogorets in the Europa League, and then endured a 1-3 defeat in Parma. Marco Baroni’s men suffered from controversial refereeing decisions on both occasions.
Nevertheless, the Italian capital side is still exceeding the expectations that were placed upon them ahead of the season, as the team remains on top of the Europa League table, and is fifth in the Serie A standings, only four behind league leaders Napoli.
After enduring a torrid 2023/24 season, Napoli were forced to start their Coppa Italia campaign early. Antonio Conte managed to survive an early scare against Modena in the opening round while making his official club debut, before pummeling Palermo by five unanswered goals to set up a meeting with Lazio in the Round of 16.
The Biancocelesti’s superior league position last season granted them the home-court advantage, but the Partenopei’s morale is sky high as they top the Serie A standings, while their absence from European football allows them to maintain fresh legs, something that cannot be said about Lazio who are currently dealing with a mini-crisis.
