Lebohang Maboe talks about his lack of playing time with Kaiser Chiefs!
In the high-stakes environment of Kaizer Chiefs, where every match is a referendum on performance, midfielder Lebohang Maboe is navigating a personal test of patience and resilience. Having returned to his boyhood club at the beginning of the season, a homecoming that held much promise, the 31-year-old has found himself in the unfamiliar role of a spectator, with just two appearances to his name so far.
Yet, as the Amakhosi prepare for a crucial CAF Confederation Cup clash against Zamalek, there is no trace of discontent in Maboe's voice, only a quiet and unwavering conviction. Speaking ahead of the pivotal Group C match, the former Mamelodi Sundowns player exuded a calm assurance that his time will come.
“I am settling in very well, I know my chance will come,” he stated, his optimism cutting through the noise of external expectations. He was quick to credit the players currently in the lineup, acknowledging their form while keeping faith in his own abilities.
“The players who have been playing are doing very well. I know myself, I trust my abilities. It’s just a matter of time; I know my chance will definitely come."
For now, his role is one of support from the sidelines, a testament to his team-first mentality. “For me right now, is just to support the players that have been playing and clap for others while I am still waiting for my chance.”
His experience in continental football, forged during his time with Sundowns, remains a valuable asset he is ready to offer. He understands the unique pressures of tournaments like the Confederation Cup, a perspective he believes will be crucial for the team.
“I think in some games [my experience] will come in handy. I know how it feels playing away, the pressure of playing in this competition,” Maboe reflected.
Despite the slow start to his second chapter at Chiefs, his belief in the squad's growth is unshaken, a sentiment that mirrors his own personal journey of waiting and preparation.
“As I said, the game gave us the full sense that we are in control, but we didn’t convert our chances. I know we will definitely grow in the tournament, that’s for sure.”
