The Times reports that Leeds United are considering legal action against Leicester City over how Leicester’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules issues may have affected the 2022/23 and 2023/24 campaigns.
Both clubs were relegated in 2023. The following season Leicester won the Championship title and returned automatically to the Premier League, while Leeds lost the play-off final.
Last season Leicester were docked six points for breaching spending thresholds in 2023/24. In 2024 they successfully appealed an alleged 2022/23 breach, arguing the Premier League had acted outside its jurisdiction.
Any Leeds case would need to show on the balance of probabilities that Leicester’s breach impacted Daniel Farke’s promotion push. In 2023/24, City finished seven points ahead of Leeds and lost both meetings home and away.
Leeds’ stance follows Burnley’s compensation award against Everton. An independent commission ordered the Toffees to pay close to £40m after it was argued Burnley would have stayed up in 2022 if a six-point sanction had been applied during the breach season rather than the following year.
Everton have appealed that decision. The ruling has opened the door to further club-versus-club claims, with Leeds and Leicester potentially next.
