The Whites are actively reshaping their squad under Daniel Farke, and Charles has emerged as a key target. Leeds initially made an opening offer worth approximately £20 million, which Southampton quickly rejected.
Undeterred, the Elland Road hierarchy returned with an improved proposal worth up to £25 million, including performance-related add-ons.
However, Southampton remain resolute, insisting that a valuation gap persists before they will consider allowing the ‘massive’ midfielder to leave St Mary’s.
Farke’s determination to sign Charles stems from a desire to strengthen his midfield options. Having already secured key midfielder Ethan Ampadu to a new long-term contract earlier this summer, Farke is eager to find a technically gifted, progressive partner to anchor the centre of the pitch. Charles, who can dictate the tempo from deep, fits this profile perfectly.
Despite Southampton’s firm stance, negotiations between the clubs remain ongoing. The Saints are under no immediate financial pressure to sell, but Leeds’ persistence suggests they are prepared to stretch their budget to secure their target.
Whether it requires a third structured bid or a compromise on add-ons, Leeds United appear determined not to take “no” for an answer in their pursuit of the talented midfielder.
Meanwhile, Leeds are also pursuing a deal for Parma’s in-demand goalkeeper Zion Suzuki, although Juventus’ interest has complicated matters on that front.
