Leeds United will wait until the end of the season to pursue a sale of Joe Gelhardt after opting not to push a January deal.

According to Leeds Live, the recall clause in his Hull City loan expired at the weekend, so he cannot be brought back mid-season. The 23-year-old has been on a season-long loan with Championship promotion hopefuls Hull and has enjoyed his best campaign to date.

He has not featured since limping out of a home defeat to Middlesbrough at the start of December, but had 10 goals before that setback. He is set to return to action this evening at Preston North End.

Leeds had no plans to recall him to play in the Premier League, though a recall to facilitate a sale could have happened if a suitable offer emerged. His recent inactivity and injury ended any chance of that this month, and he is due to rejoin Leeds at the end of the season.

Hull would like to keep him, but must navigate a transfer embargo this summer and find the funds. A sale would also aid Leeds’ PSR position, with income from a former academy player classed as pure profit.

Gelhardt is under contract until the summer of 2027. Leeds could keep him next term, but both sides appear ready to move on, with a sale seen as beneficial for club and player.
