Chelsea have sacked head coach Liam Rosenior ahead of Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final against Leeds United at Wembley, installing under-21s boss Calum McFarlane as interim head coach.

The club said in a statement that they had parted company with Rosenior, thanked him and his staff, and noted his professionalism since a mid-season appointment. It added that McFarlane will lead the team until the end of the season with support from existing staff, the club are targeting European qualification and FA Cup progress, and a process will follow to make the right long-term appointment.

Chelsea travelled to Brighton on Tuesday on the back of four straight Premier League defeats without scoring. They were beaten 3-0 at the Amex, making it five league losses in a row without a goal for the first time since 1912.

The decision was confirmed on Wednesday evening after that defeat, with Rosenior’s position under scrutiny before Sunday’s tie.

Leeds and Chelsea meet at Wembley on Sunday for a place in the FA Cup final.
