Leicester City began life after Marti Cifuentes with a 0-2 home defeat to Charlton in the Championship, Caleb Okoli’s early red card and Jordan Ayew’s missed penalty proving decisive under interim boss Andy King.

According to LeicesterMercury.co.uk, City could end the day 17th, and another reverse to a side below them only deepens relegation concerns.

After 15 minutes Okoli was sent off for hauling back Miles Leaburn near halfway. Charlton briefly thought they had scored from a corner, but a foul on Jakub Stolarczyk was given, with replays suggesting City were fortunate.

With 35 minutes played, Harry Clarke advanced on the right and crossed, stand-in centre-back Bade Aluko misjudged his header, and Sonny Carey flicked over Ricardo Pereira before volleying into the bottom corner.

Harry Winks replaced the injured Hamza Choudhury to a mixed reception and helped City’s passing before the break. Yet Luke Chambers stepped inside Louis Page and crossed for Lyndon Dykes, who peeled off Luke Thomas and Ben Nelson to volley in for 2-0 at half-time.

City rallied after the interval and won a penalty 10 minutes in when Abdul Fatawu was tugged by Amari’i Bell. Ayew struck the outside of the left post, then inadvertently blocked Page’s follow-up after Thomas Kaminski spilled Ricardo’s drive.

Charlton then managed the game to the finish. Aluko, on at centre-back, offered hope with a strong second half despite the earlier error, while Stephy Mavididi and Winks were among the brighter performers.
