Will Alves could finally earn a Leicester City breakthrough next season, with relegation and possible sales creating an opening. According to LeicesterMercury.co.uk, that chance comes despite a difficult year at Huddersfield.

It is four-and-a-half years since his City debut, yet a first league start still eludes him. He only turned 21 last week, and a breakout now feels increasingly important.

He suffered a serious knee injury in the FA Youth Cup late in 2022, returning to senior action in August 2024. A loan to Cardiff in the second half of last season faltered amid their relegation fight, which ended in demotion.

This season at Huddersfield, a foot injury sidelined him from late September to late December, then a further lay-off from mid-March to mid-April. He struggled for minutes under winter arrival Liam Manning, who often leaned towards more defensive options.

Alves started the final game, only his fifth League One start, and Huddersfield beat Wimbledon 4-0. Acting boss Martin Drury praised his one-v-one work and influence.

Despite a stop-start campaign, among League One players with more than 500 minutes he ranked eighth for successful dribbles per game. His strengths look most evident on the left, though he has often operated centrally.

With City relegated and potential sales ahead, the left wing may open up for him. The task is to marry that dribbling with creativity and goals, and stay fit for a run. It feels like he is ready, and the opportunity could be there to have a real go at becoming a City regular.
