PSG have dominated Ligue 1 since the Qatar Sports Investment takeover in 2011. LOSC Lille and AS Monaco are the only clubs to steal a league title from the Parisians in the last decade, with RC Lens almost coming close.

With France’s top flight looking to garner more attention from the casual football fan and those abroad, they might take a risk on a major decision that could shock the football world.

L’Équipe reported on Tuesday that Ligue 1 is considering introducing playoffs to determine the league champion.

The idea being discussed is a knockout tournament involving the top four teams—semifinals and a final—to add more excitement to the end of the season amid PSG’s overwhelming dominance and to generate greater interest in the title race.

Ligue 1 can count on PSG to bring players many football fans want to see. Nonetheless, with the capital club having an edge in the spending department, it seems the league wants to help other clubs have a chance at winning the league.

Still, it will be interesting to see if the league goes down this route and whether this will spark interest in French football domestically and internationally with this twist.
