Lionel Messi surpassed Neymar for the most assists in international football (60) during Argentina’s 6-0 win against Puerto Rico in a friendly last night.
After missing the game against Venezuela last week, the Inter Miami star was imperious at the Chase Stadium.
The 38-year-old dinked a lovely pass to set up Gonzalo Montiel. His brilliant back-heel for Lautaro Martinez’s winner made him the all-time international assist leader.
Braces from Alexis Mac Allister and Martinez, and Steven Echevarria’s own goal steered Argentina to a dominant victory.
Messi registered 75 passes, the second most in the game, including 15 final-third balls and created five big chances to wrap up an exquisite display.
He has been unstoppable for Miami this season, bagging 26 goals and 15 assists in Major League Soccer.
Messi has registered 68 goals and 31 assists in 81 games for the Herons. He is only two assists shy of reaching the 400 mark in his professional career.
The 2022 World Cup winner is also the second all-time international top scorer, with 114 goals, behind only Cristiano Ronaldo (143 goals).
Martinez has equalled Hernan Crespo’s tally of 35 goals in Argentina’s all-time top scorers list after his double against Puerto Rico.
The Inter Milan striker is behind third-placed Sergio Aguero (41 goals).
The 27-year-old has scored five goals and provided an assist for Inter in Serie A and the Champions League this season.
