Aston Villa produced one of their finest Premier League performances of the season as Unai Emery’s side defeated Liverpool 4-2 to strengthen their grip on Champions League qualification.
Villa Park crackled with belief long before kick off and the home side responded with a display full of intensity, ambition and attacking quality. Ollie Watkins was at the centre of everything dangerous, scoring twice and creating another as Villa overwhelmed Liverpool during key moments of the contest.
For Liverpool, the defeat leaves fresh uncertainty in the race for Champions League football next season. Arne Slot’s side showed flashes of quality but defensive lapses and costly mistakes punished them severely.
Villa struck first in a relatively cagey opening half. Their breakthrough arrived through a beautifully worked corner routine that completely caught Liverpool out of position. Morgan Rogers curled home superbly for his 10th Premier League goal of the campaign, sending the Holte End into celebration.
Liverpool responded after the interval through Virgil van Dijk. Szoboszlai delivered a dangerous free kick and the Dutch defender powered his header beyond Emiliano Martinez to restore parity.
Yet Liverpool’s recovery lasted only moments. Five minutes later, Szoboszlai slipped deep inside his own half and Villa seized the opportunity instantly. Rogers showed composure and awareness to slide Watkins through on goal, and the striker made no mistake with a calm finish beyond Giorgi Mamardashvili.

Villa sensed vulnerability and continued driving forward. Emery’s players attacked with confidence and precision, while Watkins tormented Liverpool’s defensive line throughout the evening.
Liverpool attempted to regain control as Slot introduced Florian Wirtz and Federico Chiesa from the bench. Rio Ngumoha also came close when his long range strike crashed against the post.
Still, Villa carried greater menace. Emiliano Buendia nearly produced one of the goals of the season with a stunning effort that rattled the woodwork before Watkins struck again moments later. Mamardashvili denied Pau Torres initially, but Watkins reacted quickest to tap home from close range.
Mohamed Salah was introduced in an effort to rescue something for Liverpool, but Villa refused to retreat. Their energy levels remained extraordinary despite Wednesday’s Europa League Final against Freiburg looming large on the horizon.
John McGinn then crowned the evening in spectacular fashion. The Villa captain collected possession outside the area before bending an unstoppable strike into the corner, sealing a memorable 4-2 victory.
Van Dijk grabbed a late second goal for Liverpool in stoppage time, but it did little to alter the mood around Villa Park.

This victory pushes Aston Villa closer to securing Champions League football and maintains momentum ahead of their meeting with Freiburg in Istanbul. Emery has transformed Villa into one of the Premier League’s most organised and fearless sides, and this display reinforced their growing status among England’s elite.
For Liverpool, concern continues to build. A 19th defeat in all competitions this season highlights ongoing inconsistency during a tense closing stretch of the campaign. Slot’s team remain in the battle for a top four finish, but pressure is mounting with every dropped point.
Villa left the pitch to deafening applause. Liverpool departed knowing there is little margin for error left in their Premier League season.
