Liverpool have confirmed an injury setback for Joe Gomez, who will miss Sunday’s meeting with Leeds United and the start of the 2026/27 Premier League season. Andoni Iraola plans to give first minutes to several returning seniors, with a £60m summer signing among them.

Leeds conclude their US tour at Soldier Field in Chicago on Sunday, kick-off 9pm UK time. According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, both sides arrive on the back of 1-0 wins, Leeds beating Sunderland through a Lukas Nmecha goal and Liverpool edging Wrexham.

Ryan Gravenberch, Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz are back in training. Iraola said his idea is to involve that trio against Leeds, alongside centre-back Jeremy Jacquet, who joined from Stade Rennais earlier this summer, so the defender could make his Liverpool debut.

Jacquet’s availability is timely for a defence short on experience. Virgil van Dijk has not travelled for the US tour after his World Cup exertions, and Giovani Leoni has been sidelined for almost a year.

Gomez missed the Wrexham win after going off with a muscle problem 10 minutes into the Sunderland game. Iraola said the issue will keep the defender out for weeks, typically around a month, and he thinks it will be impossible to have him ready for the start of the season.

Leeds have fitness concerns of their own, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Jaka Bijol yet to feature stateside. Sebastiaan Bornauw returned to start against Sunderland, while goalkeeper Lucas Perri missed out with a knock.
