Marc Guehi was moments away from becoming a Liverpool player in the summer, but a potential move was shut down by Crystal Palace at the eleventh hour.

The Reds interest in Guehi didn’t die with that summer deal however, and the England international is still very much a wanted man at Anfield.

With less than six months remaining on his contract, a summer move as a free-agent still feels like the most likely outcome for the 25-year-old, but a January move could still materialise.

Liverpool have been linked with several central defenders this winter, and Guehi’s move to Anfield could finally happen.

Liverpool face plenty of competition for Guehi

When the proposed deal in the summer fell through, things became a lot harder for Liverpool in the pursuit of their priority defensive target.

Guehi’s expiring contract means that he is now free to agree a deal with foreign clubs to move as a free agent in the summer and, although there is plenty of interest from other Premier League sides, the defender’s future could be elsewhere in Europe.

According to a recent report from TEAMtalk, Real Madrid and Barcelona are both very keen on a deal for the former Chelsea man and Bayern Munich retain an interest despite being close to agreeing renewed terms with Dayot Upamecano.

Closer to home, Manchester City are reportedly very keen on signing the Englishman in January, with their interest accelerated by recent injuries to Ruben Dias and Josko Gvardiol.

Now, according to a report from the Mirror, Arsenal have also entered the race for Guehi but it remains unclear whether the league leaders are plotting a January move or will bide their time until the summer.

Will Guehi join Liverpool?

Liverpool clearly need defensive reinforcements soon. Ibrahima Konate is also into the final six months of his contract and Joe Gomez faces an uncertain future at Anfield. Virgil van Dijk is also approaching his 35th birthday.

Last summer’s failed deal shows how highly the Reds’ recruitment team value Guehi and it would be a surprise if Slot’s side didn’t make a concerted effort to bring the Palace man to Merseyside.

Guehi was sold on Slot’s project less than six months ago, but a disappointing start to the season for the champions may have damaged their chances.
