Liverpool’s centre-back situation continues to be complicated.

The Reds have only got THREE senior options in the position - Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate and Joe Gomez - and the Premier League title holders saw Konate limp off with a quad injury at the weekend.

It was a nightmare scenario for head coach Arne Slot - who was forced to deploy Ryan Gravenberch in the heart of his defence against Chelsea.

The club sold Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen last summer and missed out on the signing of Marc Guehi on transfer deadline day.

Gomez linked with AC Milan

Numbers were boosted by the addition of Giovanni Leoni on a £26m deal from Parma, but the 18-year-old was injured on debut and a torn ACL is expected to keep him out for a year.

And according to a new report in Football Insider, club sporting director Richard Hughes is ready to make a move for a new defender in the winter window.

Although Gomez was wanted by AC Milan in the summer window, the England international ended up staying put. And it’s a good thing he did considering Liverpool’s current issues in the position.

Liverpool looking at centre-back deal for January

So don’t expect Gomez to be heading to Serie A in the new year. In fact, you can assume that they will make an attempt to land a new stopper.

“As long as Joe Gomez is needed and is playing games, I think he’s happy at Liverpool,” the report reads.

“There was obviously interest from AC Milan in the summer window. I’m sure there’s still interest from some foreign clubs in Gomez as well.

“But Liverpool’s current plight means that they can’t even consider letting Gomez go.

“They’re probably looking to bring in another centre-back, not lose a centre-back in January.

“So I think that’ll be the current situation.”

Could Liverpool come back for Guehi?

Liverpool may well come back in for Guehi - either in January for a fee or else next summer on a free transfer.

It remains to be seen whether Guehi can be tempted from Crystal Palace - with the FA Cup holders holding firm on deadline day and blocking Liverpool’s bid.
