Liverpool’s preparations for the 2026 World Cup continue to gather pace as qualification edges closer to completion. With the tournament in the USA, Canada and Mexico just nine months away, several Reds are expected to feature heavily on the biggest stage.
One name virtually guaranteed to be in Brazil’s starting line-up is Alisson Becker. The Liverpool goalkeeper helped his national team to a 3-0 victory over Chile on Friday, a result that confirmed their place at the World Cup.
Alisson has not always been undisputed first choice for the Selecao, with Manchester City’s Ederson previously sharing goalkeeping duties. However, Ederson’s move to Fenerbahce has cleared the way for Alisson to cement his spot. At 32 years of age, he was trusted by Carlo Ancelotti for the win over Chile, and he repaid that faith in record-breaking fashion.

According to Globo, Alisson achieved his 45th clean sheet in 75 appearances, setting a new benchmark for Brazilian goalkeepers in the 21st century. In doing so, he surpassed Julio Cesar’s record of 44, a figure that had stood for several years.
It is a remarkable feat for a player who has sometimes struggled to replicate his Liverpool form for the national side. Since his debut more than a decade ago, Brazil’s fortunes have been mixed, but Alisson has provided reliability and calm during a turbulent period.
The former Roma stopper now has his sights set on another milestone. If selected as first choice in 2026, Alisson will match Claudio Taffarel’s record of starting three consecutive World Cups for Brazil. Taffarel was between the posts from 1990 through to 1998, a run that Alisson can equal next summer.
Friday’s game in Rio de Janeiro also marked a proud moment for another goalkeeper with Liverpool ties. Lawrence Vigouroux, who was part of the Reds’ academy between 2014 and 2016, made his senior debut for Chile in the same fixture.
Vigouroux never made a first-team appearance for Liverpool, but he has built a solid career in English football and now represents Swansea City in the Premier League. Born in Camden, he also spent time with Chilean side Everton de Vina del Mar, but his professional path has been rooted in the English system. Facing his former club’s No 1 on his international debut was a symbolic moment that highlighted Liverpool’s far-reaching influence.
For Liverpool, Alisson remains a cornerstone of Arne Slot’s squad. Having helped the Reds to the Premier League title in 2024-25, he continues to provide the authority and assurance that made him a record £67 million signing.
With Brazil now looking ahead to the 2026 World Cup, Alisson is not just a veteran presence but a record-holder and leader. His clean sheet tally is evidence of both consistency and excellence, and the chance to equal Taffarel’s World Cup legacy only adds further motivation.
For club and country, the next year promises to be one of the most significant in Alisson Becker’s career.
