Cody Gakpo on adapting to change at Liverpool

Cody Gakpo believes Liverpool will “find a way forward” as Arne Slot’s reshaped side adapts to life after a summer of significant change. Speaking to Premier League Productions, the Dutch forward reflected on the evolution of the squad and his ambitions for the season, as the Reds prepare for another title challenge.

Liverpool return to Premier League action against Manchester United this weekend, eager to bounce back from a difficult run before the international break. Consecutive defeats to Crystal Palace, Galatasaray and Chelsea tested Slot’s early reign, yet Liverpool remain only a single point behind league leaders Arsenal after seven matches.

For Gakpo, the recent setbacks are not cause for panic but part of a natural adjustment process within a team still finding its rhythm. “When new players come in, it’s always difficult to adapt,” he said. “We lost a lot of players who were here for years. Now we’ve got fresh faces and need to make everything fit again. It’s going well, and every day we’re getting to know each other better.”

The 25-year-old also noted the challenges caused by disrupted preparations. “It’s unfortunate that Alex [Isak] didn’t really have a pre-season, but these things happen. We’ll find a way forward.”

Pursuing Another Premier League Title

Gakpo’s focus is clear: defending the Premier League title remains Liverpool’s primary ambition. “We want to defend it,” he said. “We’ve got a good squad, good players and a strong team. We also want to do better in the Champions League this year. Competing in four competitions means aiming to win all four — that’s always the goal.”

The forward’s words capture both optimism and determination, reflecting a mindset that has become characteristic of the club in recent years. Liverpool’s consistency under pressure last season, capped by the dramatic home victory over Tottenham that sealed the title, showed a team capable of thriving when the stakes are highest.

Gakpo recalled that day with a smile. “Some matches you just know you’re going to win. Against Tottenham at home, it felt like destiny. Lifting the trophy at Anfield, surrounded by our fans, was an unforgettable moment.”

Finding Home in Liverpool

Since his arrival from PSV Eindhoven, Gakpo has become one of the quieter but most reliable presences in the squad. His integration has been seamless — a combination of professionalism, humility and an understanding of what Liverpool represents.

“It’s a privilege,” he admitted. “Every day I get to do what I love and try to get better. This is a special club — amazing people, amazing supporters, and a great environment. I feel at home here.”

That sense of belonging extends beyond the pitch. “When I’m in Holland, I sometimes find myself wanting to come back home — to Liverpool,” he said. “That tells you everything. It’s the club, the people, and my family all together that make it home.”

Looking Ahead to a Defining Season

As Liverpool’s campaign gathers pace, Gakpo’s role may prove increasingly influential. His versatility across the front line, composure in tight spaces, and intelligence in build-up play make him integral to Slot’s evolving system.

The forward’s calm demeanour also provides stability in a side balancing ambition with transition. For a manager still embedding his ideas, players like Gakpo — tactically disciplined and emotionally grounded — are invaluable.

Few could have predicted how quickly he would settle when Liverpool’s interest became concrete in December 2022. “It went so fast,” he recalled. “After the World Cup, I was in Dubai when my agent called to say Liverpool were serious. Within four days it was done. I knew it was the right move — I felt calm, and that was a sign from God it was meant to be.”

Now, as another campaign unfolds, Gakpo stands as one of the figures ensuring that Liverpool’s evolution continues with purpose rather than panic. For him, the aim remains the same: to win, to grow, and to ensure that Liverpool’s story of success is far from finished.
