Luis García Plaza has been appointed Sevilla head coach on a contract running to June 2027. The 53-year-old arrives with the brief of securing top-flight survival.

According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, he is already in Seville and was greeted by the media this afternoon, having been out of work since December 2024 after being dismissed by Deportivo Alavés.

Matías Jesús Almeyda’s reign lasted 32 matches, 29 in La Liga and three in the Copa del Rey, before he said goodbye to the squad. García Plaza inherits a side 15th, on 31 points after 29 rounds, three clear of 18th-placed Mallorca, who have 28.

He should take charge of the squad on Wednesday, starting to get to know his players during the international break. His debut comes at the Carlos Tartiere against Real Oviedo, bottom of the table and eight from safety.

Sevilla’s slide has been marked by draws with Betis and Rayo, then defeats at Camp Nou and against Valencia at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán. He will be presented during a busy international window as he seeks to restore competitiveness to a team whose relegation worries have resurfaced.
