Matías Almeyda’s reign is over, Sevilla are 15th after 29 games with eight wins, 14 draws and seven defeats. The sacking had looked inevitable after the home loss to Valencia amid internal pressure. It means seven managers have failed to finish a season since Julen Lopetegui left.

Luis García Plaza will take charge for the final nine games. Diario de Sevilla reports he is travelling to formalise a deal, and ABC says it runs to season’s end with an option if safety is achieved. He will start Wednesday, using the break before hosting Real Oviedo.

Before the exit was confirmed, ex-Sevilla midfielder Enzo Maresca, most recently at Chelsea FC, was asked if the club had called him. “No,” he said with a half smile, adding, “He was the one who pushed me most to become a coach,” in reference to Manuel Pellegrini after spells together at Málaga CF and West Ham United. The remarks came on the podcast Despejados.

Three months ago, Luis García Plaza said Sevilla, like Valencia, are suffering because of financial realities but remain big clubs who must recycle and grow, and he hoped they would return to the elite. “I believe Sevilla will be competing again to be the fourth team in Spain,” he told Rafa Mainez.

He must now try to make those words real at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán. His arrival ends talk of alternatives such as Javi Calleja, Manolo Jiménez and Diego Martínez. The objective is clear, mathematical safety in LaLiga.
