Manchester United are closing in on Atalanta midfielder Ederson as Michael Carrick looks to strengthen midfield before Casemiro leaves at the end of June.
Press Association reports that talks have progressed and a deal is believed to be close. The fee is put at up to £38m.
United have moved quickly after finishing third, a year on from losing the Europa League final and finishing 15th. Carrick’s extension was announced before the finale at Brighton as work intensified on Ederson.
Ederson would be the first signing of the Carrick era if completed. United have considered Aurelien Tchouameni, and Elliot Anderson is admired, though the Nottingham Forest midfielder is said to favour Manchester City.
United posted an operating profit of £37.7m for the first nine months of fiscal 2026, against a £3.2m loss a year earlier. The results cited headcount reduction programmes after widescale redundancies and restructuring following Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s arrival as co-owner.
Revenue guidance has been lifted to £665m and EBITDA to £210m, with chief executive Omar Berrada crediting on-field improvement alongside business transformation, and highlighting the women’s Champions League quarter final and first League Cup final, participation again in the World Sevens Series, plus academy runs to the FA Youth Cup and PL2 play-off finals.
Work continues on the ambition to build a new 100,000 seater stadium, while the cost of dismissing former boss Ruben Amorim and his staff was about £16.7m.
