United looking to bounce back from defeat in opening pre-season fixture
Manchester United will continue their preparations for the new campaign with a second pre-season friendly of the summer against Rosenborg this week.
Man United suffered defeat to Wrexham in their opening game of pre-season last weekend, as Sam Smith scored the only goal of the game six minutes before half-time in Helsinki, Finland.
On a positive note, head coach Michael Carrick was able hand minutes to a number of senior players and give a debut to summer signing Andrey Santos.
Now it’s on to Norway for the Red Devils and the chance for Carrick to assess where his squad is at as the countdown begins to the Premier League opener against Hull next month.
Rosenborg, meanwhile, are in the middle of their league season and go into this game on the back of successive 3-0 wins over Kristiansund and IK Start to pull away from the relegation zone.
Manchester United vs Rosenborg is scheduled for a 5pm BST kick-off on Friday, July 24, 2026.
The match will take place at the Lerkendal Stadion, in Trondheim, Norway.
Live stream: Manchester United’s full pre-season campaign will be broadcast via in-house channel MUTV, which requires a subscription. Membership costs £7.99 per month.
Live blog: You can follow all the action on matchday via Standard Sport’s live blog.
Man Utd are set to, once again, be without Benjamin Sesko. The striker missed the loss to Wrexham having failed to make a full recovery from the shin issue that saw him sit out the final stretch of last season.
Sesko is set to be unavailable for selection once again, though there is every expectation that he will be fit for the start of the Premier League season.
The same applies to summer signing Karl Darlow after undergoing a minor procedure while at Leeds a few months ago.
Carrick could repeat the trick of naming two entirely different teams in each half, particularly with the staggered returns of his World Cup stars.
Rosenborg have doubts over striker Dino Islamovic after he missed the win over Start, but other than that they are at full strength.
Benjamin Sesko is not yet ready for a return to action for Manchester United
Pre-season is more about fitness and performances rather than results. Carrick will have been encouraged by Santos’ debut against Wrexham as well as displays from one or two youngsters.
As it’s still very early in United’s pre-season, they will give up a lot in terms of fitness to a Rosenborg side that has already played 13 league games. For that reason, we expect an entertaining draw.
Draw, 2-2.
The two sides have only ever met once before and that too was a pre-season friendly two years ago and Rosenborg came out on top, winning 1-0.
Manchester United wins: 0
Rosenborg wins: 1
Draws: 0
Manchester United to win: 17/20
Rosenborg to win: 13/5
