The January transfer window is looming as a crucial period of the season for Manchester City. Pep Guardiola’s side has stumbled of late and the City squad is in desperate need of reinforcing. Sam Lee has reported for the Athletic that a defender, midfielder and striker are on City’s shopping list. Now a new report has linked Manchester City with a January move for Lille striker Jonathan David. All things being considered the Canadian international is the perfect player to provide support for Erling Haaland.
Graeme Bailey has reported for TBR Football that Jonathan David is looming as a January target for Manchester City. Bailey goes on to report that City have been monitoring David in recent weeks. Furthermore, Bailey’s report suggests that Lille do not wish to sell their star striker next month. It is also included in Bailey’s report that David has six months remaining on his current contract with Lille. Perhaps that is a situation that the Premier League champions could leverage next month.
Jonathan David has had a superb season to date for Lille. In 26 appearances in all competitions, he has scored 17 goals so far in all competitions. That is a superb tally from the young Canadian international. He has scored four goals in the UEFA Champions League this season with those goals coming against Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid and Juventus. That fact alone speaks to his quality. But it’s his overall game that appears to be ideally suited to playing in Pep Guardiola’s squad.
Jonathan David is a versatile player. He can play in a variety of roles up front. He has shone this year up front, but he can easily slot into a wide role or play behind a striker like Erling Haaland if need be. That versatility alone would make him a welcome addition to Pep Guardiola’s squad. But the attributes that stand out in his game make him a tantalising prospect. There is a tactical intelligence that stands out in David’s game. He isn’t just a penalty box predator when he plays as a number 9. David can drop deep to link up play. He is also adept in possession, and his link-up play is superb. He is also quick so that is another quality attribute of his game. He is also a quality finisher which makes him almost the complete package.
As a player, Jonathan David ticks every box Manchester City needs to fill as a player who can play a role in Pep Guardiola’s squad. Whether it is as a player to provide support for Erling Haaland or play alongside him. It remains to be seen if David is gettable next month. But Lille do risk losing him for free as he only has six months left on his current contract. Perhaps Manchester City can use that situation to their advantage. If they can they would be landing the perfect player to complement their squad.
