  • Ruben Dias identified as potential Man City exit this summer, with Real Madrid showing interest
  • The defender’s representatives are believed to have been instructed to test the market for a move
  • City will sell if Dias pushes for an exit, despite a stated preference to keep him

Manchester City defender Ruben Dias has been identified as a potential outgoing this summer, with Real Madrid among the clubs showing an interest in the Portuguese centre-back, as per a fresh update.

Dias’s situation has been the subject of growing speculation since Pep Guardiola‘s departure from the Etihad Stadium, with reports suggesting the 29-year-old’s representatives have been instructed to explore a move away from Manchester.

Inter Milan were also reported in recent weeks to be plotting a move for the centre-back, with the picture surrounding his long-term future continuing to shift as Enzo Maresca prepares to succeed Guardiola at the Etihad Stadium.

Real Madrid’s pursuit & City’s stance on Dias sale

According to Sam Lee of The Athletic, Dias is regarded as a potential outgoing at City this summer, with interest from Real Madrid now forming a central part of the picture surrounding his future.

The update closely with City’s own position on the matter. As recently reported, the club’s preference is to retain both Dias and Josko Gvardiol amid the broader uncertainty created by the managerial transition, but City would be prepared to listen to offers should either player push for an exit.

Real Madrid are undergoing a major rebuild and the Santiago Bernabeu has been previously been described as the most likely destination for Dias given their well-documented issues at centre-back – with Eder Militao‘s recurring injury problems, Antonio Rudiger now 33 and David Alaba‘s expected departure all contributing to a defensive overhaul.

Raul Asencio and Dean Huijsen have also failed to consistently convince since stepping into senior roles, adding further weight to suggestions that Madrid will move for established, proven defensive options this summer.

What would a Dias departure mean for City’s defence?

Dias has been one of City’s most influential figures since arriving from Benfica for £65 million in 2020, going on form the backbone of a defence that won four consecutive Premier League titles and a historic treble in the 2022-23 season.

However, the 2025-26 season was disrupted by injury setbacks, including a hamstring problem that ruled him out before the Carabao Cup final, as his place under Maresca remains far from settled, despite signing a new contract until 2029 only last summer.

With John Stones already gone, the prospect of also losing Dias would represent a significant test of City’s defensive depth heading into Maresca’s first season in charge.

Whether Dias ultimately stays to fight for his place or follows the path being mapped out by Real Madrid remains to be seen, but with three years still on his contract, City retain firm control over how – and on what terms – any departure would be structured.
