Although the relationship between Rodri and Real Madrid tumbled after the 2024 Ballon d’Or saga, it appears the club haven’t lost sight of the sheer talent of the Manchester City star.

In fact, Real Madrid have been increasingly linked with a move for Rodri in recent months, which interestingly comes at a time when the future of Vinicius Jr. remains uncertain.

Although Rodri has struggled with numerous injury problems, Real Madrid are aware of the Spaniard’s talents and what he can bring to the table.

Manchester City eye renewal of Rodri’s contract

Unfortunately for Real Madrid, Manchester City, too, appear to be more than aware of Rodri’s talents and are now looking to extend his contract, reports journalist Graeme Bailey, as cited by Mundo Deportivo.

Rodri’s current contract at Etihad expires in 2027, with the club keen on renewing the deal before it gets too late.

According to the journalist, City have started working on renewing Rodri’s contract; he has recovered from his injury and negotiations are progressing.

Manchester City identify Rodri as a key player for the club as they want to secure the backbone of the team.

Bailey added that this is part of a wider strategy to lock down their core players, with Gianluigi Donnarumma signing a long-term contract, Erling Haaland and Ruben Dias signing contract extensions. Now, it’s Rodri’s turn.

This doesn’t bode well for Real Madrid, who may have to look at other alternatives in their bid to add more quality in the defensive midfield positions next summer.

The Spanish giants have been closely linked with a move for English star Adam Wharton, although the club could face stiff competition in the race to sign the Crystal Palace star.
