Manchester City captain Bernardo Silva wants his teammates to kick on from their Carabao Cup glory to push for more silverware in the run-in.

The Blues are nine points adrift of Premier League leaders Arsenal in the table but retain a game in hand over the Gunners, whom they beat 2-0 at Wembley on Sunday to win their first trophy in two seasons.

City are at a nascent stage of their transition under director of football Hugo Viana, who has conducted a major revamp of Pep Guardiola‘s squad since taking over from Txiki Begiristain last summer.

There is great doubt over whether City can usurp Arsenal to the Premier League title again, having lost significant ground in the chase after recent back-to-back draws against Nottingham Forest and West Ham.

Bernardo Silva hails Manchester City teammates for defeating ‘fantastic’ Arsenal in Carabao Cup final

We’re really happy with Carabao Cup glory, says Silva

Silva has been an ever-present at the heart of midfield for City and Guardiola this season, with the Portugal international expected to leave the club when his contract expires this summer.

“Wembley is always special. Giving a trophy back to the club, to the fans, it’s always very special – so we’re really happy,” the 31-year-old said in conversation with official club media after Sunday’s cup triumph.

Manchester City have been handed a priceless confidence boost for the Premier League and FA Cup run-in as a result of a flawless showing at Wembley, with academy graduate Nico O’Reilly scoring a stunning four minute brace of headers in the second-half to win the final for City.

Stranger things happen in football every day and having endured a difficult March – that saw City slip up in the title race and exit the UEFA Champions League at the hands of Real Madrid for the third year running – victory over Arsenal in the Carabao Cup final can do wonders for the Blues psychologically.

Silva: Hopefully we can fight for the Premier League and FA Cup

The Manchester City skipper is not satisfied with a mere Carabao Cup and has called upon a new-look, young dressing room to build on their cup heroics in the league and FA Cup run-in.

“To be able to have that feeling that yes we can have it done, we can do it, it’s huge. It’s huge for the future of Manchester City and I’m really proud, really happy for us, for them (the new players),” the former AS Monaco man added.

Pep Guardiola raves about ‘unbelievable’ Manchester City performance in Carabao Cup final over Arsenal

City face Liverpool in the FA Cup quarter-final after the international break, with Premier League meetings against Chelsea and Arsenal also on the horizon in what will be make or break for Guardiola and co over the course of the next three weeks.

“Hopefully we can fight for the next two trophies in the last two months of the season,” said Silva, who has been linked with the likes of Juventus, Galatasaray and Paris Saint-Germain among other suitors as he assesses his options with a firm expectation that he will be leaving Manchester City this summer.
