Manchester United will target Crystal Palace midfielder Eberechi Eze or Bournemouth winger Antoine Semenyo if a deal can not be agreed for Bryan Mbeumo.
An opening offer worth £55m for Mbeumo was turned down by Brentford earlier this month and the two teams are yet to reach an agreement on a fee. Mbeumo has given priority to a move to Manchester United, despite interest from Tottenham Hotspur.
United want to sign Mbeumo but are not prepared to pay over the odds for the Cameroon international. ESPN are reporting that the club’s CEO Omar Berrada has set an unspecified predetermined price point for the deal. He is not prepared to go over that figure.
Berrarda adopted a similar method during his time at Manchester City. The Citizens withdrew from deals for the likes of Harry Maguire and Alexis Sanchez when it was deemed the cost had become too expensive.
The club’s board are determined to ensure the Red Devils do not overpay for talent after a decade of recruitment mistakes.
Eze is a player of interest and has a release clause in his contract at Palace. That fee is understood to be £68m – with £60m up front and a further £8m in performance-related add-ons
Semenyo is another option and impressed to score 11 league goals for Bournemouth last season. The 25-year-old is valued north of £50m and could join an exodus of talent at the Vitality Stadium this summer.
Dean Huijsen has signed for Real Madrid, while Milos Kerkez is expected to move to Liverpool. PSG are also interested in signing centre-back Ilya Zabarnyi.
