Former Palmeiras goalkeeper Marcos has apologised to Corinthians goalkeeper Hugo Souza and to Rauany Barcellos after a social media remark about racist abuse directed at the player. On Monday he had reacted to a post with smiling emojis and the acronym “PQP”.

The abuse came on Sunday night at Canindé after Corinthians reached the Campeonato Paulista semi-finals, when Portuguesa fans shouted slurs as he left the pitch. According to Jovem Pan, video captured insults including “favelado”, “piolhento” and calls for him to cut his hair.

Barcellos challenged Marcos on Instagram, saying he had mocked a serious case and asking how often he had heard such abuse or seen his children face prejudice over appearance, hair, skin colour or social class. She asked why he laughed.

Marcos then apologised, saying he had only glanced at the post and thought it was rival-fan banter that they would take in good humour. He said it would not happen again.

Portuguesa said it is working to identify and punish those responsible, offered cooperation to the authorities and expressed solidarity with the player and Corinthians. Corinthians condemned the abuse, pressed the Paulista federation on Monday to investigate and sanction, and said it will not accept impunity.

Hugo Souza saved two penalties in the shootout and another during normal time in the quarter-final.
