Arsenal’s Mariona Caldentey and Alessia Russo have both been nominated for Women’s Footballer of the Year
Arsenal head coach Renee Slegers and midfielder Mariona Caldentey are both nominated for Women’s Super League awards in January.
Mariona is up for goal of the month for her sensational strike against Chelsea, which sealed a 2-0 win.
And Slegers is nominated for manager of the month, with her side unbeaten in the WSL (winning one and drawing one, against Manchester United). Although the award is for WSL achievements, the Gunners did enjoy an exceptional January, making their way through to the fifth round of the Women’s FA Cup, and ultimately winning the FIFA Women’s Champions Cup, albeit with the final in February.
It follows the news that two Arsenal players are nominated for the WSL player of the month award. Goalkeeper Anneke Borbe and club captain Kim Little were both shortlisted for their performances in January.
Voting for the awards is open to the public and closes next week.
The other nominees for goal of the month are as follows:
Sandy Baltimore – Chelsea, v West Ham United Kirsty Hanson – Aston Villa, v Brighton and Hove Albion Julia Zigiotti – Manchester United, v Aston Villa Jess Park – Manchester United, v Aston Villa Verena Hanshaw – West Ham United, v Leicester City Shekiera Martinez – West Ham United, v Leicester City Freya Godfrey – London City Lionesses, v Manchester City
The other three nominees for manager of the month are Andree Jeglertz of Manchester City, whose league leaders won both their WSL fixtures in January, and Marc Skinner of Manchester United and Gareth Taylor of Liverpool, whose teams were unbeaten over the course of the month.
Jeglertz has won the award for the past three months in succession – the first manager to do so.
