Kylian Mbappé has suffered a left hamstring injury, putting El Clásico and the remainder of Real Madrid’s season in doubt. Madrid’s run-in was already complicated, with injuries to Arda Güler and Eder Militao and Barcelona closing in on LaLiga.

Initial talk was of a minor issue, but tests on Monday at Valdebebas confirmed damage to the semitendinosus in his left leg, the club said in a statement, adding that his recovery will be monitored.

Mbappé asked to be substituted with 10 minutes left at La Cartuja against Betis after repeatedly feeling discomfort in his hamstring while consulting head of medical services Niko Mihic. He went straight to the dressing room for an initial assessment, and the hosts equalised in added time.

He will miss this weekend’s match against Espanyol. There is hope he could be ready for El Clásico on 10 May, but with little at stake and the World Cup approaching, he is unlikely to take risks and his season could be over.

Arbeloa’s side still face Espanyol, Barça, Real Oviedo, Sevilla and Athletic Club. Only two of those, Oviedo and Athletic, are at the Bernabéu.

Mbappé could also lose the pichichi race. He has 24 goals, with Muriqi on 21 the nearest challenger.
