Memphis Depay ends goal drought for Corinthians, speaks on ‘confidence’

Corinthians hosted Grêmio on the afternoon of Sunday, November 2, at the Neo Química Arena, in a match for the 31st round of the Brazilian Championship and won by a score of 2 x 0. The goals for the Alvinegro were scored by defender Gustavo Henrique and forward Memphis Depay. The result lifted the Corinthians team to ninth position with 42 points (11 wins, nine draws, and 11 losses – 34 goals scored and 35 conceded).

Right after the final whistle, as he was leaving the pitch, Corinthians’ number 10 – Memphis Depay – gave an interview to TV Globo and analyzed the match, celebrating the end of a nine-game goal drought. His last goal had been on July 30, against Palmeiras, in the first leg of the Copa do Brasil round of 16.

“I always want to score, I always want to provide assists. I think today we had many opportunities, we played very well. I had more chances to score more goals. But yes, sometimes things don’t happen the way we want. I always want to score, to be available.”

“And I think sometimes we make the wrong decision when we’re in front of goal. We have to make the best decision so we can score more goals. And that’s part of what I think we did very well today,” he began.

Next, he was asked about the team’s winning streak in the national competition and the importance of these wins for the group’s confidence. The Parque São Jorge club is coming off three straight wins in the tournament, all by 1 x 0, against Atlético-MG (H), Vitória (A), and Grêmio (H).

“I think, as you can see, when you win games, the team gains more confidence. The team needs confidence. Many times, we have to build the play from the back. And today we did that very well. We had very good positioning. And we can still improve. We have to improve. But of course, when we have confidence, we can win more games. And that’s the goal, to win more games. The team is focused, very focused, so I’m happy about that,” he concluded.

In the 2025 season, Corinthians’ number 10 has nine goals (second-highest scorer) and 10 assists (top assister in the squad this year) in 43 matches (34 as a starter). Since his arrival at Alvinegro in September 2025, he has 16 goals and 14 assists in 57 games (45 as a starter) – 32 wins, 12 draws, and 13 losses.

Last season, he was instrumental in the team’s surge in the 2024 Brazilian Championship towards the preliminary phase of the Conmebol Libertadores – seventh place with 56 points – after fighting against relegation for most of the tournament. In 2025, he was decisive in winning the 2025 Paulista Championship, especially in the derbies against Santos and Palmeiras, in the group stage, semifinal, and final, respectively.

After facing Grêmio in Itaquera for the Brasileirão, Corinthians remains focused on the national competition. Next Wednesday, November 5, at 4pm (Brasília time), Alvinegro will visit RB Bragantino at the Cícero de Souza Marques Stadium, for the 32nd round of the Brasileirão.
