Memphis Depay explains phone use on bench during Flamengo v Corinthians draw | OneFootball

Memphis Depay has addressed why he used his phone while on the bench during Corinthians' match against Flamengo after the incident drew scrutiny. The player said in a social media post that he used the device only to contact medical staff in the Netherlands.

Depay left the field after 22 minutes of the first half. He had started the move for Corinthians' goal, then sat down before play restarted and requested a change, with Rodrigo Garro coming on.

From the bench, he chose to remain pitchside to support his team despite his injury, noting he could have stayed in the dressing room. He also expressed frustration with the result and said they would keep working for better days.

Flamengo were left aggrieved by a mistaken red card shown to Evertton Araújo. Even so, they fought back for a 1-1 draw and moved to 14 points in the Brasileirão.

The Flamengo squad have Monday 23 and Tuesday 24 off, returning to training on Wednesday 25. Their next game is at Red Bull Bragantino on 02 April at 21:30 Brasília time in Bragança Paulista, in the ninth round.
