Memphis Depay suffered a right thigh strain in Corinthians’ draw with Flamengo on Sunday and will miss the Netherlands’ March friendlies. The club said in a statement that an MRI on Monday confirmed the injury and gave no recovery timeframe.
He will begin treatment with the Royal Netherlands Football Association’s medical staff, having already been called up for the window. He will not be available for Norway on 27 March, 16:45 Brasília time, at the Johan Cruijff Arena, or Ecuador on 31 March, 15:45, at the Philips Stadion. No replacement will be called up.
Depay started at Neo Química Arena but lasted only 20 minutes after feeling discomfort. Moments before Yuri Alberto scored, he supplied the pre-assist to Matheus Bidu, who crossed for the striker. He was replaced by Rodrigo Garro.
He had been due to leave Brazil after the match to join up in Europe. He returned to the bench after half-time and was seen using a phone, and he was in contact with the national team’s doctors.
Depay was already a concern around the turn of the year, missing early January with a muscular rebalancing linked to knee pain from the end of last season. After the draw with Chapecoense on Thursday, when he did not travel for load management, head coach Dorival Júnior said he had been playing with knee difficulties.
He has 12 appearances in 2026, 10 starts, with one goal and one assist, totalling 776 minutes, the 13th highest in the squad. Corinthians next play on one April at Fluminense at 21:30 at the Maracanã in round nine of the Brasileiro.
