Manchester United interim boss Michael Carrick lauded Old Trafford for producing “special” moments like Benjamin Šeško’s late winner against Fulham.
The Red Devils survived a late scare to secure a 3-2 victory in an Old Trafford thriller, courtesy of Šeško’s injury-time header, after Fulham recovered from 2-0 down.
Carrick’s dream start – three wins from as many matches against challenging opposition of rivals Manchester City, league leaders Arsenal, and now Fulham – has seen his side rise to fourth in the Premier League.
Carrick said: “I’ve said it before the City game — it is a special place and it does special things. But credit to the boys, we knew today was going to be really tough.
“We were getting questions about breaking down a low block, and we knew it was never going to be straightforward.
“The boys put in a big effort — to build a lead, get pegged back, then go and get a winner. To win the game in front of the Stretford End, there’s not much better than that.”
Carrick also hailed Šeško for scoring the late winner, his fifth goal in 19 appearances, after a slower start to life in Manchester that the Slovenian would’ve preferred.
He said: “I’m so delighted for Ben. As a striker, you’ve got to be in there to take your chances.
“Sometimes you miss, but Ben has done a lot of great work in the past few weeks.
“That’s what you get — your reward. To miss one and finish another, he’ll remember that for quite a long time.”
The former United midfielder also gave Fulham’s quality and the challenge they presented full acknowledgement in his post-match press conference.
“Going into the game, I was aware of how good Fulham are. The way they are playing, we were going to have to answer a lot of questions,” Carrick explained.
“This was a big game. They are a very good team, close behind us in the league, and today was a tough one — if not tougher — because everyone expected it to be different. But we didn’t, and we got the result in the end.”
Man United resume their bid for a return to European football’s biggest stage against Thomas Frank’s Tottenham in the early kick-off next Saturday (12:30pm GMT).
