Manchester United manager Michael Carrick is refusing to let premature talk of a Premier League title challenge distract his squad, despite a remarkable resurgence that has seen them climb to third in the table.

Since succeeding Ruben Amorim in the Old Trafford dugout, Carrick has guided United to six wins in seven matches, including a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace on Sunday.

United have picked up 19 points from a possible 21 under their interim manager. However, they still trail league leaders Arsenal by 13 points, albeit with a game in hand as the season enters its final stretch.

Addressing United’s position in the 2026 title race, Carrick maintained a grounded perspective and remains keen to keep expectations in check despite the recent upturn.

“Listen, you can’t rule anything out in football, right?” Carrick said in his pre-match interview ahead of United’s trip to St James’ Park.

“You’ve got to be realistic and know where it’s at. We’ve just got to try winning games and see where we are.

“Above us are two fantastic teams, and there are some really good teams in and around us. We’ve had a good run, but we’re certainly not getting carried away.”

While Carrick has refused to entertain any talk of a title challenge, he will know the Red Devils are well-positioned to secure a top-four finish and a return to the Champions League.

Next up is a crucial midweek clash against Newcastle United. Given the injury and sickness crisis currently rocking the Magpies, Manchester United could be set to continue their recent resurgence by claiming all three points on Tyneside.
