Morgan Rogers' sale this summer could net Middlesbrough a major windfall

Middlesbrough have been in the mix for promotion to the Premier League all season, but it looks as though it will be the play-offs for the Teesside outfit.

Rob Edwards’ departure for Wolves in November could’ve derailed their Championship campaign, but the appointment of Kim Hellberg has proven a success.

However, recent form has taken Boro out of the top two and into the play-off places.

Middlesbrough haven’t competed in the top flight since 2017, but this year has offered the team a path back to the division, and they are now on the cusp of their first top six finish since 2023.

Regardless of what league the club are playing in next season, it could be quite a busy summer at the Riverside.

The upcoming transfer window will be Hellberg’s first real opportunity to shape the first team squad to his liking and his first pre-season in charge of the side.

Middlesbrough could be set for Morgan Rogers windfall this summer

It has been reported by talkSPORT that Aston Villa are open to the sale of Morgan Rogers - even if they earn a place in the Champions League.

The Midlands outfit currently occupy a top four position in the Premier League, which would earn them a place in the premier European cup competition.

But the 23-year-old is now attracting interest from a number of Europe’s biggest clubs, including Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United.

It’s believed that Paris Saint-Germain are also keen on the playmaker, and it could take at least £80 million to secure his services in the transfer market.

Middlesbrough reportedly have a sell-on clause from their sale of Rogers to Aston Villa in the 2024 January window.

The sell-on clause is understood to be worth 20 per cent of any profit earned by the Premier League side for his sale, after he joined in a deal worth up to £15 million.

While an £80 million figure has been mentioned as an initial starting point for talks, Aston Villa are hoping to drive up this fee through a bidding war, which could take the final number above the £100 million earned from their sale of Jack Grealish to Manchester City.

If Rogers is sold for £80 million, then Middlesbrough could be set for a windfall of £13 million this summer.

This would come as a major boost for the club, regardless of which division they’re competing in - but even moreso if they do not win promotion to the Premier League.

Morgan Rogers transfer saga will be of huge interest at Middlesbrough

The sale of Rogers has the potential to become a massive transfer story this summer, and Middlesbrough will be keeping an extra keen eye on proceedings.

A windfall of between £13 million and 17 million, depending on the final sale price, would be a massive revenue source for the summer.

That could prevent a key player in Hellberg’s side from being sold, or potentially even help add another player or two, making the sell-on clause a great piece of business.

Rogers has enjoyed an excellent campaign, and a strong showing at the World Cup for England could even increase his value further, but would mean any sale won’t happen until July, if Aston Villa wait until after England’s tournament is over.
