FLW's Middlesbrough fan pundit has given his verdict on Seny Dieng's future at the club
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…
Seny Dieng’s future at Middlesbrough must be uncertain going into the January transfer window.
The goalkeeper hasn’t been in the picture for Boro this season under either Rob Edwards or Kim Hellberg, which could lead to an exit from the club when the market opens in the new year.
The Senegal international joined the Teesside outfit from QPR in the 2023 summer transfer window, and was initially first choice under Michael Carrick before he fell out of favour during the 2024/25 campaign.
He now finds himself behind Sol Brynn in the pecking order, with his contract running until the end of 2026/27.
It remains to be seen whether there will be a market for him in the upcoming January window, but Middlesbrough could be open to a sale given his lack of minutes in the side.

When asked about Dieng’s future, FLW’s Middlesbrough fan pundit Liam Day claimed he’d be shocked if the goalkeeper is still with the club by the end of the winter market.
He believes that Brynn is now firmly the first choice, and that Jon McLaughlin’s arrival in the summer provides the cover the team needs so that they can offload Dieng.
“I’d be shocked if Seny Dieng was still here, to be honest,” Day told Football League World.
“Sol Brynn’s been such a solid goalkeeper, and while I don’t think he’s quite ready for the Premier League, where we are now he’s perfect and he’s not really put a foot wrong.
“And signing a player like Jon McLaughlin on the bench just for the experience, he seems to have had a big impact, you can see it in the warm up he’s making jokes.
“I’d be shocked if Seny Dieng, after such a big injury, stayed at Middlesbrough.
“I think there’s a decent keeper in there.
“First season for us he was very solid and I wouldn’t have dropped him.
“In that second season, he absolutely fell off a cliff and it was mistake after mistake.
“Then, I’ve seen a few rumours of problems with his attitude, I don’t know how true that is.
“I’d be very, very surprised if he played another minute for Middlesbrough.”
Dieng made 17 appearances in the Championship last season under Carrick, with his last game coming in a 3-1 defeat to Leeds United on 10 December.
The Teesside outfit finished outside the play-off places in 10th, missing out on a top six finish by only four points, but that was enough to lead to a change in manager.
But the change has not helped Dieng’s fortunes, as he remains a secondary option in the first team squad.
The goalkeeper’s contract expires in 2027, but he could depart as soon as next month if this continues.

Dieng isn’t benefitting from sitting on the bench, and Boro aren’t getting anything from paying him the privilege.
The goalkeeper is a Championship calibre player when at his best, and there should be clubs willing to take a punt on him now, even if he proved quite error-prone when he was last in the Middlesbrough team.
The 31-year-old also brings a lot of experience, so there’s no doubt that he could be of use to a number of clubs at this stage of his career.
A January sale would make the most sense for all parties, as Hellberg has both Brynn and McLaughlin ahead of Dieng in the pecking order.
