Mayor Giuseppe Sala has announced to have concurred with Inter and Milan on the price for the sale of San Siro. He will now proceed with the formal steps to greenlight it, presenting the resolution to the City Council, which will vote on it in late September, La Gazzetta dello Sport informs.
The two clubs will pay €197M for the current arena and its surrounding areas, based on a valuation provided by the income revenue authority. The seller will contribute to renovating a tunnel and reclaiming some land for a total of €22M.
There’s optimism, but not total certainty, that the motion will pass and that Milan and Inter will indeed acquire San Siro. The Mayor is embattled and under scrutiny because of an ongoing investigation into city planning in recent years. If the vote is indeed positive, it will be appealed by those who oppose the project.
The two sides aim to have definitive clarity on the matter by November 10th. The Rossoneri have spent €55M on an alternative area, San Donato. Their cousins could join them if the present plan doesn’t see the light of day.
Sala commented on the situation to RTL (via Sky).
“We have come to terms with the teams. The administration will deliberate on it, then it’ll be up to the City Council to vote by the end of the month. UEFA told us that they wouldn’t consider Milan for the Euro 2032 if San Siro is still the stadium.”
Therefore, the strategy is to build the new one by 2031. The idea of doing so next to the Giuseppe Meazza, rather than tearing it down, hasn’t been completely abandoned.
