Sunderland held Manchester United to 0-0 at the Stadium of Light, and Opta’s latest model points to a mid-table finish.
The improved display followed defeats to Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa, then a 1-1 draw at already relegated Wolverhampton Wanderers. United arrived on Wearside after beating Chelsea, Brentford and Liverpool to clinch a Champions League return.
Regis Le Bris’ side became the first to shut out United under Michael Carrick’s interim reign, roared on by over 47,000 supporters. Chemsdine Talbi, Noah Sadiki, Lutsharel Geertruida and Brian Brobbey all went close to forcing a winner.
The result has arguably ended Sunderland’s hopes of European qualification next season. The projection has Arsenal first on 82.42 points, Manchester City second on 79.80, Manchester United third and Liverpool fourth.
Everton are predicted ninth on 52.49, Chelsea 10th on 52.14 and Sunderland 12th on 50.23. The campaign concludes later this month, so their final spot will soon be known.
