Liverpool’s 2-4 defeat at Aston Villa on Friday night, in the 37th round of the Premier League, left their Champions League place unconfirmed, and Mohamed Salah responded with a lengthy social media message calling for a return to a more attacking identity.
According to L'Équipe, the forward wrote on Saturday that the loss was very painful and the supporters did not deserve it, and he urged a return to a heavy metal, front-foot side that wins trophies, a nod to Jürgen Klopp and, without naming him, a swipe at current manager Arne Slot.
He said that is the football he knows and the identity that must be retained, calling it non-negotiable and saying newcomers should adapt. Salah will leave at the end of the season after nine years and 441 matches for the club, with 257 goals and 122 assists.
He also wrote that winning a few games here and there is not what Liverpool should be, adding that simply qualifying for next season’s Champions League is only the bare minimum.
Liverpool hold a four-point lead over sixth-placed Bournemouth after their 12th league defeat of the campaign, 20 in all competitions. Bournemouth have two matches left, against Manchester City on Tuesday then Nottingham Forest on Sunday, while the Reds have one to play, against Brentford.
