Jamie Carragher has urged Liverpool manager Arne Slot to reconsider Mohamed Salah’s (33) automatic place in the starting XI, arguing that the Egyptian is no longer performing at the level to justify being “undroppable.”
Speaking on Sky Sports after Liverpool’s 2-1 defeat to Manchester United, Carragher said Salah’s form has become a growing concern. The 33-year-old has now gone seven Premier League matches without a non-penalty goal, his longest such drought since joining Liverpool in 2017, and missed two clear chances at Old Trafford.
“I think we’re at that stage now where Mo Salah shouldn’t be a guaranteed starter every week,” Carragher said. “He’s not in the form to demand that status anymore. At his age, and with how Liverpool are evolving, Slot needs to start thinking differently.”
Carragher suggested Salah should remain a fixture at Anfield, where his sharpness around the box still poses a threat, but that away games, particularly those requiring defensive discipline, might call for alternatives such as Jeremie Frimpong, who impressed off the bench on Sunday.
With Liverpool having spent heavily on Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz this summer, Carragher believes the club’s future should be built around youth and energy rather than sentiment.
“Liverpool have invested in Isak and Wirtz for a reason,” he added. “They represent the next phase. Salah’s legacy is secure, but it’s time to start planning for what comes next.”
