Albacete’s 3-2 shock against Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey last 16 lit up Carlos Belmonte and spoiled Álvaro Arbeloa’s debut after Xabi Alonso’s departure. One terrace favourite, Jon Morcillo, was not involved, watching from the stands hours before completing a move to promotion-chasing Almería.

Diario de Almería reports the fee is 500,000 euros plus a further 500,000 in add-ons.

The deal was advanced after Morcillo rejected a renewal offer and signalled his wish to start a new chapter. That stance, and the transfer being effectively agreed, would explain his absence from the Copa tie.

The Amorebieta-born winger played 63 games and scored 14 goals for Albacete, his last outing coming on Saturday at Zubieta against Real B. He had previously spoken in February last year about psychological issues during his Athletic spell.

Albacete thanked him for his contribution on and off the pitch, noting his visit to a school in Letur after the Dana, and wished him well.

The 27-year-old has signed for the rest of this season and four more years. He arrives with five goals and three assists this term and joins Rubi’s side, having come through Lezama and played two seasons in the top flight.
