Sunderland could be obliged to hand NEC Nijmegen a sizeable cut if Robin Roefs leaves in a big-money deal this summer.

Voetbal 4 U reports the Eredivisie club are tracking the goalkeeper’s situation on Wearside, with last year’s transfer understood to include a substantial sell-on clause that would activate upon a sale.

Roefs joined Sunderland from NEC for around £nine million before add-ons. After an impressive first Premier League campaign, the 23-year-old is being linked with a £60 million move.

The clause is said to grant NEC roughly 10 per cent of any profit Sunderland make on a future sale. On a £60 million fee, Sunderland’s profit would be about £51 million, yielding close to £five million for NEC.

NEC are also expected to benefit from a solidarity payment, reported to exceed £2.5 million at that level. Combined with the original fee, the Dutch side could ultimately clear more than £16 million across the transfers. Several clubs are credited with interest ahead of the window, while Sunderland retain a strong contractual position.
