Go Ahead Eagles are our opponents in the UEFA Europa League this Thursday at 18:45 CET at the Red Bull Arena. We're determined to finally get points on the board, with our Red Bulls aiming for their first win of the competition on the fourth matchday of the league phase. We can draw confidence from our domestic unbeaten run (five wins and one draw), including the recent 4-1 victory against Ried.

In their first ever European group stage appearance, the Dutch side, under the guidance of coach Melvin Boel, have already achieved two notable successes. After two wins (2-1 away at Panathinaikos and 2-1 at home against Aston Villa) and one defeat (0-1 at home against FCSB), the team sits in 12th place in the UEFA Europa League standings with six points. Only in the Eredivisie are the 2024/25 Dutch Cup winners struggling to find their form. Following their recent defeat against Breda, they currently sit in 11th place (out of 18) with a mere 13 points from 11 matches.
The team from the Hanseatic city of Deventer usually play in a 4-2-3-1 formation with a relatively young starting eleven with an average age of 24.3 years. However, we went well below that figure with an average age of exactly 22 against SV Ried. The visitors can certainly count on their fans to support them, as several thousand supporters are expected to make the trip to Austria. After all, this is the Dutch side's first away game within driving distance from the Netherlands, as their first Europa League away match in Athens would have required a nearly 3,000-kilometer journey by car or campervan (each way). We still have the home advantage, and we intend to keep the points here on Thursday!

Go Ahead Eagles caused a sensation in the Netherlands last year by surprisingly winning the cup and qualifying for the Europa League. Now, with six points already to their name, they're showing they're more than competitive there as well. They're a very disciplined team, often defending deep and are particularly dangerous on the counter-attack, as they demonstrated in their win against Aston Villa. For us, it's a tough challenge, but one we're really looking forward to and eager to take on, because we're determined to get points on the board in the Europa League.

We'll give it our all to finally get some points. Our successes in the league and the cup certainly give us confidence, and we want to carry that over into the Europa League. However, anyone who underestimates the Dutch side is making a big mistake. Their recent victory against Aston Villa, in particular, is a remarkable achievement and shows what they're capable of.
