John Textor has stepped back from running Lyon after he had been linked with buying Sheffield Wednesday.
John Textor has stepped back from overseeing the day-to-day running of Lyon after they were demoted to the second division.
The American businessman has been in the news a lot over the past few weeks, as his co-ownership of Crystal Palace has been problematic for the Eagles in their quest to reach the Europa League, with Lyon also set to play in that European competition.
However, the French side were then demoted to Ligue 2 due to their financial problems, although that decision is subject to appeal.
In the meantime, Textor agreed to sell his stake in Palace, although that hasn’t guaranteed them a place in the Europa League, with UEFA delaying a decision on that matter.
Furthermore, Textor, who also owns Brazilian club Botafogo, has also been linked with Sheffield Wednesday, as fans push for Dejphon Chansiri to sell the club.
And, in a development that could help the Owls, the BBC has confirmed that Textor has now resigned from his ‘leadership position’ at Lyon.
Whilst it’s important to note that he remains the majority owner of Lyon, Michele Kang has been named as the new co-owner.
It will be intriguing to see what happens with Textor next, but it seems apparent that he wants to stay in football.
As mentioned, he has been linked with Wednesday, and that’s not the first club in England he has been keen on, as he previously tried to do a deal to buy Everton, but his stake in Palace was an issue at the time.
Now, with Woody Johnson having bought his stake in Palace, Textor may be in a position to get back involved, and his decision to step back at Lyon means he will have more time to focus on his next project - and he has made it clear he wants to buy a club in England.
Whether he would be a good owner for Wednesday is obviously open to debate, and you only have to see Lyon’s struggles now to see that he has made mistakes.
Yet, it’s worth pointing out that Botafogo have enjoyed success, and Wednesday may feel that anyone is better than Chansiri at the moment.
